Transocean Ltd. will pay $1.4 billion in civil and criminal penalties and fines for the company's role in the Gulf of Mexico oil rig explosion and spill, the U.S. Justice Department has announced.

    misdemeanor violation of the Clean Water Act....what a crock...just because they are paying out large amounts of dollars (from a person's perspective) does not provide any for of assurance, punishment or restoration.

    Is Halliburton also a defendant, for the inadequate concrete sealing job that contributed to the blowout?

    This settlement is a drop in the bucket, compared to the devastation done to the Gulf. The use of massive amounts of the toxic dispersant Corexit, used to mask the scope of the spill, will continue to do far more damage than did the oil itself.
