Yes, it has to do with the costs of attrition and also client preferences for diversity (as noted below), and it also has to do with safeguarding law firm succession plans. I write about all of these things and more in my book Best Friends at the Bar: Top-Down Leadership for Women Lawyers (Wolters Kluwer Law & Business/Aspen Publishers, 2015). Until law firms understand this combination of factors and take them all seriously, we are going to continue to stall at the same statistics for retention and advancement of women lawyers that we have been seeing for at least ten years.
