Marcia Ternus was one of the best justices the Iowa Supreme Court ever had. No one wrote a clearer, more useful, guidance-laden and direct opinion than she. I thought her views were mildly progressive - she and colleagues unanimously came down for gay marriage, after all - but it was hard to tell from her opinions, because she was so straightforward in addressing the facts and applying the law without grinding an axe. The 7 justices who participated in the Varnum decision were a model of humane judging combined with judicial restraint. I fear we may not see their like again.
